A counter-extremism chief has defended the Government's Prevent programme amid criticism it is failing to engage cut-off communities and stop terror attacks.

In the wake of the bombing in Manchester last week, which killed 22 people including children, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham claimed the Prevent strategy had become ‘toxic' among parts of the Muslim community and called for it to be ‘fundamentally reviewed'.
