Joanne Roney was given the accolade of chief executive of the year at The MJ Awards. She talks to Heather Jameson about working her way to the top, and the number one quality needed in sector leaders

When Manchester City Council chief Joanne Roney was announced as the chief executive of the year at The MJ Awards, the room rose to its feet in applause. She looked stunned.

‘It was, genuinely, the proudest moment of my professional career – and genuinely unexpected,’ she says. ‘There was a lot of talent in that room, and I’m just so thrilled.’
