Austerity drive brings £3.75bn cash savings

Whitehall delivered £3.75bn of cash savings in the first 10 months of the coalition’s austerity drive, the Cabinet Office has claimed.

Whitehall delivered £3.75bn of cash savings in the first 10 months of the coalition's austerity drive – equivalent to taking 1p off income tax – the Cabinet Office claimed this week.

The figures, vetted by government auditors, were revealed on 1 August, and led Cabinet Office minister, Francis Maude, to wonder aloud what his predecessors ‘had been doing in this office before me'.
