Capital projects spending up due to tube costs despite cuts

Capital spending by England’s local authorities increased by 8% during 2010/11 despite the fact that town halls were preparing to make swinging cuts over the period.

Capital spending by England's local authorities increased by 8% during 2010/11 despite the fact that town halls were preparing to make swinging cuts over the period.

But figures released last week by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that most of the spending increase was down to the Greater London Authority's (GLA) continued overhaul of the capital's tube and rail network via Transport for London in advance of the Olympic Games.
