Ministers and city leaders have been swift to offer financial packages to help riot-hit authorities and residents, through the initial stages of their recovery from last week's disturbances.

London mayor, Boris Johnson, confirmed a £50m regeneration fund had been established to improve high streets and town centres in the capital damaged by three successive nights of rioting and looting from 6 August.
