Central-local 'barriers' hinder Welsh recycling

Wales Audit Office reports 'substantial barriers' preventing Welsh councils from significantly improving recycling rates.

'Substantial barriers' are preventing significant improvements to recycling rates across Welsh local authorities, the country's spending watchdog has warned.

A study by the Wales Audit Office (WAO), published on 16 February, has found that while recycling rates across Wales have increased, disagreements between councils, the Welsh government and contractors over how waste is collected - and potential recyclable materials processed - is preventing authorities from maximising improving public appetite for recycling.
