Decentralisation minister Greg Clark could hand city-regions a far wider range of powers if they opt for a directly-elected mayor as their figurehead, he has revealed.

Decentralisation minister Greg Clark could hand city-regions a far wider range of powers if they opt for a directly-elected mayor as their figurehead, he has revealed.

Speaking to The Times newspaper on the eve of local government elections that will determine whether major UK cities choose to hold votes for directly-elected mayors, Mr Clark said he supported the idea of powerful local leaders responsible for a wide geographical area.
