Government austerity measures are having a disproportionate impact on workers and the economy in the north-west of England, local government's largest trade union has claimed.

Drawing on recent official unemployment figures, Unison warned that while there had been a modest fall in unemployment nationally, the northwest of England had 'sadly bucked the trend and suffered the biggest increase of any region of the UK'.
