COUNCIL TAX

Council tax rebate won't fix a long-broken system

The chancellor’s decision to give a rebate of £150 to those in council tax bands A-D 'has done a great job of demonstrating just how broken the council tax system is, and just how much local government needs financial reform', says Heather Jameson.

I increasingly find myself in a state of cognitive dissonance when it comes to Government policy. Take the Levelling Up White Paper: great news when it comes to the Government's commitment to devolution but, when it comes to the detail and the clarity on funding, it all feels a bit lacking.

The same is true on last week's announcement that the Government would use councils to ease the burden of the cost of living crisis.
