The political response to this week's rioting across the UK escalated today, when a minister said he would consider new laws to make perpetrators homeless – while the leader of one affected council warned his own staff he would sack anybody involved in the disturbances.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles responded to doubts that councils have the power to make homeless many of those convicted of rioting by warning he would consult on a new set of proposals designed to deliver that objective.
