More than 1.2m local government and health workers will be balloted on a ‘sustained’ programme of strikes this autumn.

More than 1.2m local government and health workers will be balloted on a 'sustained' programme of strikes this autumn unless ministers withdraw controversial pension plans, the country's largest public sector union has warned.

Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison, said his members were on 'collision course' with the coalition government over Treasury plans to increase public sector staff pension contributions by an average of 3% from next year.
