Last Tuesday, I had originally written this column looking at the implications of the local elections for a General Election. However, it is clear a day is a long time in politics!

While the local elections are vitally important for those areas – and indeed saw the first-ever county combined authorities come into existence – the focus for the whole country will now be clearly on the impending General Election.
