Slashing the amount of ‘nannying' guidance issued to councils could help Whitehall reduce its bill by £1.5bn a year, the Local Government Association (LGA) has estimated.

Smith Square last week revealed details of research it has conducted – as part of a government consultation – into the cost of ‘confusing and dictatorial' Whitehall guidance and statutory duties aimed at local authorities.
