Delivering a compelling longer-term vision of place

In shaping an area-based agenda it's important to remember that place is made up of people as well as spaces, says Sheila Oxtoby.

As statutory authorities, democratic bodies and property owners, councils are legitimate and credible leaders of place. To lead is to serve, after all. Place-making is about developing and delivering a clear, coherent and compelling longer-term vision – an aspiration for your area's future which communities and partners can get behind.

We are one of only five places in England chosen to participate in the Future Place programme as an exemplar of high-quality place-making, based on our overall vision, ambition and innovative approach. The key is to understand where you are currently, where you want to go, and then how you get there and bring others along on that journey.
