Whitehall officials are monitoring the financial situation at several small local authorities amid ministerial concerns about the stability of Oadby & Wigston BC, The MJ understands.

It is believed Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities officials have been briefed on the financial challenges facing at least five smaller authorities with low populations and tax takes, as well as irregular access to incentivised funding streams.
