Communities secretary, Eric Pickles, has praised councils for their swift and decisive response to last week's riots – and said authorities would also play a key role in prime minister David Cameron's ‘war on gangs'.

In an exclusive interview with The MJ, Mr Pickles also indicated his team would focus increasingly on their communities' remit as the Government searches for answers to exactly why last week's rioting and looting took place across major English cities.
