Former spending chief doubts quango savings

Sir John Bourn has questioned government claims that Whitehall’s ‘bonfire of the quangos’ would deliver savings.

Sir John Bourn, former head of the National Audit Office, has questioned government claims that Whitehall's ‘bonfire of the quangos' would deliver £30bn in savings by 2015, warning ministers found it too easy to produce ‘monster figures'.

Sir John, who left the NAO in 2008, told The MJ many of the Government's figures were ‘pretty dubious'.
