Ministers have said they will proceed with controversial plans for a benefits cap, despite an embarrassing defeat on the matter in the House of Lords last night.

An alliance of Labour, crossbench and Liberal Democrat rebel peers voted to exempt child benefit payments from the coalition's planned £26,000 annual cap on benefits paid to a household last night.
