Councils have warned the Home Office not to impose unrealistic targets for asylum and resettlement schemes ahead of a consultation on the issue.

The Local Government Association (LGA) said Whitehall's forthcoming consultation on the UK's capacity to accommodate refugees through ‘safe and legal' routes - a requirement of the new Illegal Migration Act - should not end with councils committed to numbers they cannot manage.
