These are tough times for national and local government funding, says Mark Conrad.

As every politician boards a speeding bandwagon to congratulate Britain's exceptional Olympic athletes, it's worth remembering that Britain's political class have rarely truly valued sport and its ability to galvanise and protect communities – despite what they have been saying in response to Lord Moynihan this week.

During the public sector 'days of plenty', around 2003, I secured an interview with the-then chief executive of Sport England, Roger Draper.
