An independent inspector today began investigating Northamptonshire CC's precarious finances amid fresh signs MPs are pressuring the Government to reorganise the county.

Council sources said they welcomed the Government-commissioned inspection, led by former Hackney LBC chief executive Max Caller, as an opportunity to highlight funding difficulties facing local government, specifically counties grappling with escalating social care costs.
