Institutional investment into housing must be scaled up

The next Government will need to adopt a pragmatic approach to the housing crisis, acknowledging the role institutional investment has to play in delivering the homes the country needs, says Claire Kober.

Last month, the Financial Times reported a stark warning from housing associations: ‘We can't build houses'.

Some had ceased all new development, others said the system is ‘maxed out'. A perfect storm of high interest rates, inflation, low Government grants and rising construction costs, as well as net zero and remediation obligations has meant traditional registered providers are struggling to build. Put simply, the finances do not stack up.
