A lifeline for vulnerable children

With successful schemes helping care leavers spread their wings, Javed Khan says local authorities should be offering supported lodgings services for vulnerable young people.

‘You feel you're worth something.' This was just one of many comments vulnerable young people made when we asked them how they felt about staying with a host family as part of a ‘supported lodgings' scheme.

Leaving home can be particularly tough for children who have been in care. While UK youngsters leave home on average aged 25, 62% of looked-after children leave care at just 18. They all-too-often find themselves facing an adult world alone and unprepared.
