Councils in London have been handed an extra £6m to help benefit claimants renting in the private sector cope with new rules.

Councils in London have been handed an extra £6m to help benefit claimants renting in the private sector cope with new rules limiting public payment to them.

The funds are part of a £49m four-year package of government support until 2015, designed to prevent housing benefit claimants in the capital falling off a ‘cliff edge' following the introduction of controversial rules which limit payments to £400 a week for the largest families.
