Newcastle to hand strike cash to charities

Newcastle City Council has said it will pay the £100,000 in wages it expects to save through this week's pensions strike.

Newcastle City Council has said it will pay the £100,000 in wages it expects to save through this week's pensions strike to a fund that supports local charities.

Local government commentators and practitioners have praised the innovative idea – and other local authorities have been urged to follow suit.
