Pickles brings forward General Power to 'settle' prayer row

Mr Pickles has reiterated that the fast-tracked 'general power of competence' allows local authorities to hold prayer meetings.

The fast-tracked 'general power of competence' (GPC) will allow local authorities to choose to hold prayer meetings before meetings, local government secretary Eric Pickles has reiterated.

Mr Pickles has brought forward the implementation of the GPC – a key part of the Localism Act that will be fully enacted from April – so that councils can, from this week, decide to hold prayers in advance of formal meetings.
