Pickles: 'Sky's the limit' for Localism agenda

Eric Pickles encourages local authorities to use the general 'power of competence' provisions.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has encouraged local authorities to exploit the general 'power of competence' provisions in the Localism Bill to make across the board savings.

Speaking yesterday at a public services event held by think tank Reform, Mr Pickles moved quickly to dispel impressions that localism is about 'sitting on beanbags and urged councils to make better use of shared partnership arrangements in a bid to reduce overall annual expenditure of £53bn.
