Communities secretary, Eric Pickles, has urged local government to 'be pushy' with Westminster in demanding greater powers to improve residents' lives.

Delivering the closing speech at the Local Government Association conference in Birmingham this week, Mr Pickles praised councils for their positive response to budget cuts – which he said head been forced onto the Coalition because of the scale of the public deficit - and emergencies such as last summer's riots.
