Radical overhaul required to drag us into the 21st century

From central government and the NHS, to police, prisons and local government: the ‘state of the state’ is dire, says Heather Jameson. 'There are few quick fixes, but propping up the status quo is not an option.'

Past months have seen Lord Amyas Morse dominating the pages of The MJ – all eyes have been on the interim Oflog chair's plans for measuring the sector.

But Lord Morse is not the only watchdog in town: his National Audit Office replacement, Gareth Davies hit the headlines this week in more ways than one. Davies created a stir following his comments on governance and procurement at national level – and it is no mean feat to get the national news interested in procurement – but his comments are every bit as crucial for local authorities.
