Local government minister Simon Hoare this week confirmed key security costs for local elections will not count against agreed party and candidates' spending limits.

The move follows lobbying by the Local Government Association (LGA) amid evidence of rising abuse towards local councillors and candidates, and the murder of former Conservative MP for Southend on Sea, Sir David Amess, at a constituency surgery in 2021.
