Southampton dispute reaches contract 'D-Day'

Southampton's deadline for new employee terms and conditions appear to have been snubbed by hundreds of union members.

A six-week industrial dispute by staff at Southampton Council reached a critical stage today, when the authority's deadline for new employee terms and conditions appeared to be snubbed by hundreds of union members.

Port health officials have now joined refuse collectors, librarians and hundreds of other town hall employees on strike over moves by the council's senior management to slash pay levels under what they claim is a plan to protect services facing severe budget cuts.
