Striking the right deal for public servants

Public sector workers are constantly being asked to go above and beyond as councils seek to do more with less – but Mark Fletcher-Brown says asking staff what they actually want out of work and life will lift discretionary effort

The deal that sat at the heart of public sector employment is no longer on the table. There are no jobs for life. Pensions are changing. With public debt in excess of £1.7 trillion and rising, the money simply isn't there to deliver what was once taken for granted.

Maybe it's time to ask more fundamental questions about work and what each of us wants out of both it and life.
