Mind the gap

An increasing number of senior managers in local government have announced their retirement and councils are finding it harder to recruit. Martin Ford examines the challenges and looks towards solutions.

The local government sector has arguably been hit as hard as any by the COVID-19 pandemic, ravaging social care, testing public health teams to the limit, and leaving finances in tatters.

As the sector moves from crisis management to recovery, a string of chief executives have announced their retirement having put plans on hold to help lead their authorities' response to the pandemic.
