Protecting the welfare of asylum seekers in Great Yarmouth

The Home Office, with no advance notice and no funding, has left local authorities and health services scrambling to provide support for asylum seekers placed in local areas, says Sheila Oxtoby.

Like many other councils across the country, we had a surprise arrival courtesy of the Home Office last month.

With no notice or consultation, central Government took over a hotel in our seafront tourism quarter to provide temporary housing for asylum seekers.
