Could new standards regime be found guilty?

Whitehall's removal of effective sanctions to punish errant councillors is a farce, says MJ editor Heather Jameson.

Well before the coalition won the general election, communities secretary Eric Pickles made no secret of the fact he was determined to scrap the Standards Board when he assumed Whitehall's local government portfolio.

It was a move welcomed by many – cutting red tape and taking responsibility for councillors away from a central quango and back down to local level. But others were not so quick to support the move.
