Every vote counted in North Yorkshire

Paul Shevlin says drawing lots is a rare occurrence and one that put the newly-formed North Yorkshire Council elections under the national spotlight and brought a remarkable end to his career as a deputy returning officer.

So, this election was likely to be the last time I act in my capacity as a returning officer (or DRO) in Craven and it certainly proved to be memorable.

Local government reorganisation meant this was the most important local election for nearly half a century and would provide a ‘defining moment' in the new North Yorkshire Council's democracy and shape key services for hundreds of thousands of people.
