Early last week an uncanny picture appeared in the media – three party leaders standing side-by-side, delineated only by the colour of their ties. Beneath this, the media trailed a proffered hand of friendship for Scots, for the waiverers, and for the union.
As a politician, I want Scotland to remain part of our United Kingdom. As the chair of one of the new Combined Authorities of the North, I could be forgiven for allowing myself a wry smile.
