Autumn Statement: The coming years will be extraordinarily difficult

Most of the announcements in the Autumn Statement had found their way into the press beforehand and it was reassuring to listen to a fiscal statement free of shocks and surprises.

The chancellor’s statement was very much about restoring credibility and stability after the disastrous mini-budget two months ago. His three stated priorities of stability, growth and public services are right and sensible.
