Devolution in the 'new politics' era

Devolution is an assault on local democracy, or so we were told last week by Labour’s new communities spokesman, Jon Trickett.

His speech seems to signal a change in the party’s attitude toward handing power down to cities and shires. But in trying to slam the breaks on George Osborne’s devolution deals, the frontbench risks opening up a rift with its own local leaders.
