Two parties united in pursuit of centralisation

There was a time when it was tough to tell the two main political parties apart.

At national level, both sides battled over the central ground, searching for widespread appeal among the electorate.

It’s safe to say that’s no longer the case.

Since the Brexit referendum the political and societal divide has become a deep chasm, polarised at both ends.

But there are moments when the national political parties appear to harmonise.

The current moment of unity involves their approach to local politics – although, worryingly, it seems both sides are convinced they know better than those on the ground.

Take the Conservatives’ approach to waste.

Plans to tell councils exactly what waste they collect, how often and what they can charge for green waste have dogged the sector for the last couple of years.

It begs the question: Why?
