The upcoming Autumn Statement will give new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak a golden chance to sow the seeds for a strong future green economy, as Mo Baines explains

The tumultuous past weeks have created the most extraordinary high drama, offering a stark reminder that fiscal plans are shackled by the reality of financial markets.

On balance, albeit frustrating for those planning public service budgets, the delay of the new chancellor’s Autumn Statement until the 17 November is the right thing to do, allowing a calmer more considered response, after the initial policy u-turns.

But with interest rates and the cost of borrowing still rising, and the Bank of England declaring a recession, the new Prime Minister and his chancellor face a nightmarish budget baseline.
