Directors need humility, compassion and understanding

When Association of Directors of Children’s Services president Alan Wood said a specific group of academics who had written a letter to The Guardian criticising Government plans for outsourcing children’s services were churning out ‘crap’ social workers, he faced criticism that he himself was not even a qualified social worker.

The local authority pairing of education with children’s services means that many directors of such departments will have responsibility for child protection without having any training in the field themselves.
