Last-minute voter ID certificates spike predicted

Officials are braced for a last-minute surge of voter ID certificate requests ahead of this year’s elections, with only 10,000 people having applied so far.

An estimated two million people do not have the correct form of photo ID to vote under restrictions introduced for the first time in this year’s local elections yet - a month after applications opened - only 0.5% of these have asked for a certificate that would allow them to vote.
