Legality of severance payment guidance questioned

The Local Government Association (LGA) has questioned the legality of statutory guidance governing councils’ use of special severance payments.

Under the May 2022 guidance, payments between £20,000 and £100,000 must be ‘personally approved and signed off by the head of paid service, with a clear record of the leader’s approval’.
